pic cred: The Hundred
A blistering 148-run opening partnership between Ryan Rickelton and Mitch Marsh laid the platform for Sunrisers Leeds' commanding 37-run victory over London Spirit in The Hundred.
Batting first, the Sunrisers' opening pair made full use of the conditions, tearing into the Spirit bowling attack from the outset. Marsh was the first wicket to fall after a scintillating 76 off just 37 balls, striking at more than 205. His explosive innings featured seven sixes and gave the hosts the perfect start.
England white-ball captain Harry Brook then joined Rickelton at the crease, and the duo added a further 83 runs from only 32 deliveries. Brook was even more destructive, smashing 55 from just 18 balls in a breathtaking cameo.
Rickelton remained unbeaten on 94 from 42 deliveries, falling just six runs short of what would have been his maiden century in The Hundred after running out of balls. The Sunrisers eventually posted a mammoth 241/2 from their 100 balls.
London Spirit's chase got off to the worst possible start as Reece Topley removed openers Lhuan-dre Pretorius for four and Jonny Bairstow for a duck. Liam Livingstone briefly threatened with a rapid 34 from 13 balls before Nathan Ellis ended his entertaining knock.
With the chase already slipping away, Dewald Brevis and David Willey shared a 74-run partnership from 42 balls for the sixth wicket. Brevis contributed 38 from 21 deliveries before departing with the result already favouring the home side.
Willey continued to fight, adding an unbeaten 74-run stand with Jamie Overton, but it proved too little, too late. Willey finished unbeaten on 83 from 46 balls, while Overton ended on 27 not out from 15 deliveries as London Spirit closed on 204/5, falling 37 runs short.
The victory lifts Sunrisers Leeds to fourth place on the table, level on points with third-placed MI London, who remain ahead on net run rate. With three matches remaining, the Sunrisers have put themselves firmly in the race for the play-offs.
For London Spirit, the defeat is a major setback. They remain second from bottom with just three matches left and now face an uphill battle to keep their fading play-off hopes alive.
