pic cred: Lions Cricket
South African domestic cricket kicked off with some of the biggest names in the country’s cricket present in the opening round of the CSA 4-Day Series, with Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Tristan Stubbs and Keshav Maharaj among those featuring.
With several significant Proteas Test players taking part in the tournament, it was not all of them who dominated the headlines.
Last season’s leading run-scorer, Gavin Kaplan, who signed a multi-season contract with Defabet Boland during the off-season, started his campaign in the worst possible fashion. Kaplan was dismissed without scoring in both innings against the DP World Lions, a surprising outcome after the season he had last year.
His performances had also earned him a call-up to the SA A side against Bangladesh, where he scored 37 and 97 against the subcontinent side.
Another significant moment from the same match came from South Africa Under-19 pacer JJ Basson, who made a statement with an outstanding 11-wicket haul. The 19-year-old claimed seven wickets in the first innings before adding four more in the second.
Unfortunately for Basson, his performance could not inspire Boland to take all 20 wickets and force a victory, with the match eventually ending in a draw. However, one thing Basson has already achieved is ensuring that the South African cricket community takes notice of his talent early in his career.
The only other bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in the opening round was Hollywoodbets Dolphins pacer Tristan Luus, but overall, the round was dominated by the batters.
Lehan Botha grabbed the headlines with a magnificent 170 against the Lions, while Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma had earlier scored 91 on day one. In the same match, Ryan Rickelton followed his first-innings 49 with a superb 127 in the second innings, strengthening his case for a place in Shukri Conrad’s XI for the upcoming series against Australia.
Elsewhere, Flexbrand Knights’ Gihahn Cloete marked his return to Division One in style, scoring 118 against the North West Dragons.
Momentum Multiply Titans batter Donovan Ferreira also made his intentions clear for the new season, smashing 168 to help his side secure an innings victory over the Hollywoodbets Dolphins.
The star-studded Titans, who also featured Ngidi, Jansen and Simon Harmer, were one of only two teams to secure victories in the opening round.
The other winners were the North West Dragons, who delivered an impressive away win over the Knights.
While the presence of established Proteas stars drew plenty of attention to the opening round, the performances of players such as Basson, Botha and Ferreira provided an early reminder of the depth and emerging talent in South African domestic cricket.
I also corrected the Proteas captain reference to Temba Bavuma in the opening, since the later paragraph identifies him as the skipper and he is the player who scored 91.
