In a very scrappy match at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead, World Sport Betting Western Province defended their title, winning by 4 wickets with 8 balls remaining in a low-scoring affair.
In the first-ever women's cricket final in the professional era of South Africa's women's domestic cricket, DP World Lions took on the back-to-back champions. Western Province captain Leah Jones won the toss and decided to bowl first at Kingsmead, a decision that turned out to be key in the match.
The partnership between Lions' opening batters, 19-year-old Neo Molefe and former Proteas U19 vice-captain Maddison Landsman, did not last long, thanks to Caitlin Wyngaard dismissing Landsman (4) in the first over. She was caught at slip by Faye Tunnicliffe. Another former SA U19 player, Jenna Evans, joined Molefe, but they struggled to get going; their partnership of 24 runs took 43 balls. Eventually, Neo was caught at long on by Oluhle Siyo off the bowling of Tatum le Roux.
With the Lions on 29 for 2, Sunnette Viljoen-Louw came in at 4, hoping to up the scoring rate, but unfortunately, she also struggled to get going. That frustration caused the batting pair to take a suicidal second run that resulted in Evans being run out for 22. Eight runs later, Viljoen-Louw (12) was caught and bowled by Delmi Tucker, leaving the Lions on 58 for 4 after 16.3 overs.
The rest of the batters made single-figure scores, taking the Lions to 75 for 8 in their 20 overs. Le Roux took 3 for 18, Wyngaard finished with 2 for 15, and Tucker had 1 for 10 in her 4 overs. The rest of the bowlers were also very economical, including the bowler of the tournament, Nosipho Vezi.
