During the first T20 match against New Zealand at Bay Oval, Jordan Hermann sustained a grade 2 hamstring tear while fielding, which has ruled him out for the remainder of the series.
The match was a historic one for Hermann, as he played alongside his brother, Rubin Hermann, for South Africa. However, despite the 7-wicket victory, Jordan was unable to contribute with the bat.
Hermann's injury was not the only setback for the Proteas on this tour. Dane van Niekerk's injury also forced her withdrawal from the remainder of the New Zealand tour, prompting the women's side selectors to call up Anneke Bosch of the Fidelity Titans as a replacement. Notably, Hollywoodbets Pro20 record breaker Faye Tunnicliffe was not selected.
As of now, Hermann's replacement has yet to be announced. Here are three potential candidates for consideration:
- Matthew Breetzke: Breetzke, Hermann's teammate at the Dafabet Warriors, would be a solid replacement. He demonstrated his reliability as a T20 player in the recent SA20 tournament, playing a crucial role in their title-winning campaign, including a match-winning 68 off 49 balls in the final against a strong Pretoria Capitals bowling attack featuring Lungi Ngidi, Keshav Maharaj, Gideon Peters, Lizaad Williams, and Roston Chase.
- Donovan Ferreira: Ferreira was initially slated to participate in the T20 World Cup, but an unfortunate injury during the SA20 sidelined him. Prior to the injury, he was in excellent form for the Joburg Super Kings and has since continued to produce runs upon his return.<.li>
- Lhuan-dre Pretorius: The young Lhuan-dre Pretorius is likely the first name that comes to mind for many. He has consistently showcased his T20 talent in the Hollywoodbets Pro20 over the past two seasons. His omission from the tour must have been particularly disappointing, especially with the Proteas' first team rested.
